Children's classes (“Muziekland”)

“Muziekland” is an ideal introduction to music, designed especially for children who are still too young for instrumental lessons or who have not yet chosen a specific instrument. Children are taught the basics of music in a playful way (literally and figuratively!). In a cozy, casual atmosphere, all kinds of musical concepts are introduced, such as rhythm, tempo, musical notation, melodic formation, listening to music, improvisation and ensemble playing.

Muziekland is rhythm games, movement to music, movement improvisation and games involving musical concepts such as high/low, loud/soft, long/short, slow/fast. Singing, moving, discovering... that's Muziekland. Though centered on play and enjoyment, Muziekland classes teach the basic principles of music and encourage children to discover the music within themselves: a prelude to a life full of music.

Muziekland party

Celebrate your birthday party at MDH with your friends. Play a fun music game, listen to a beautiful musical fairy tale, learn popular songs on musical instruments and even make your own music video. You are welcome to bring refreshments and cake. Our teachers will do their best to accommodate your personal wishes (after consultation) to organize a fantastic music party for your child’s special birthday - no mess at home!

For further inquiries, please email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

All instruments mentioned above are used in all music classes and the teachers accompany the children on guitar and piano/keyboard. On completion of the Muziekland course, the teachers will advise parents regarding the choice of an instrument.

The best way to get information is to attend a real class! You can do that after the summer holidays. The Muziekland lessons start in the week of September 13, 2023. We would therefore like to invite parents and children to attend a trial lesson on Monday, Wednesday or Saturday. You can register directly after the lesson.

Practise at home

To learn to play an instrument, but also to learn to sing well, it is necessary to practise. Only then is it possible to make progress. With regular practise, playing will improve and the possibilities of the instrument can be discovered. As basic skills are acquired, it becomes more and more fun to play and also to make music together.

Daily practise is essential. It is easiest to do this at a fixed time. Incorporate practise into the daily routine, just like eating, brushing teeth, and going to school. Parents can play a very important role: encourage children to practise; help remind about practise times; listen during practise sessions and give positive feedback: try to make it a fun and positive experience. Coming to the lesson well prepared is pleasant for both the student and the teacher.

Of course it won't always be easy to practise every day or to be well prepared every week. Talk to the teacher about it if motivation seems to be waning - perhaps some adjustments to the curriculum can be made to rekindle the enthusiasm.

The mini violin class

The Mini Violin Class is a group lesson for children aged 5 and 6. The group consists of a maximum of 6 children and lasts 60 minutes. The accompanying lesson book contains weekly lessons and is specially made for very young violinists. Extensive attention is paid to:

  • the development of the left hand
  • the bow-hold
  • the development of the sense of rhythm
  • the development of hearing
  • the notation

Singing is an important element in every class.

The Miniviool book (Dutch) comes with a 'magic wand' with which the children can practise the bow-hold in a playful way.
A unique feature of this method is that the children become familiar with the music image from the start by means of coloring pictures.
For the parents, there are detailed instructions with every lesson stating what needs to be practised that week.
Course name: Mini violin class (weekly classes)
Teacher: Caroline Geelen
Tuition and length of class: dependent on the size of the group.

French Horn introductory course

For French Horn, the Orchestra Academy of the Hofstads Youth Orchestra offers an introductory course in collaboration with the Music Academy of The Hague. This is a unique opportunity to get acquainted with this beautiful instrument!

During the introductory training you get 18 lessons for a price of € 290. This includes the use of a horn; The Hofstads Jeugdorkest provides an instrument for each participant on a loan basis. You can take this instrument home with you to practise at home. For children aged approx. 8-12 years it is possible to borrow a smaller children's horn (while supplies last!).

The horn lessons are given by horn teacher Jana Suilen and take place at the Music Academy in The Hague. After the introductory course, the lessons can be continued at MDH.

Depending on the number of registrations, the 18 lessons of the introductory training are given in small groups of 2-3 students or individually.

For more information and registration, please visit the website of the Orchestra Academy of the Hofstads Youth Orchestra: www.hofstadsjeugdorkest.nl/orkestacademie.
